Statement

My sustained investigation tackles how we perceive strength, weakness, and the contrast between the two. These questions are the result of watching fights with cancer as a daughter, granddaughter, and friend. First, I wanted to depict the physical nature of this concept by showing tangible subjects commonly perceived as strong or weak like in “Liberty Flexes,“ “Diamond”, “Winged Victory”, “Strength of Liberty,” “Calvin,” “Two Hour Storm,” and “Bubble.” During my investigation of the comparison between strength and weakness, I wondered how something delicate becomes stronger after it is broken. Exploring this new question, I created “Broken Glass,” “Smashing Hit,” and “Stitches” which depict subject matter that speaks to this relationship. However, the psychological toll and abstract aspects of strength and weakness proved to be relevant as well. This complex idea has created an overlap in perception as each piece can be analyzed for physical or psychological meaning. Thus, my investigation has rooted itself in the idea that strength and weakness are not that different in the end.
